I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!
A trip to the Toft's Ice Cream Parlor in Sandusky, Ohio.

You may not know this but I am an ice cream snob. At the risk of opening up a can of worms, I confide in you that my taste buds have always preferred the taste of real ice cream. Not the plastic artificial flavor of “soft serve”. I can see Michael rolling his eyes at me right now. I have always disliked how soft serve ice cream clung to my tongue and to my mind, tasted like plastic. There goes that can!
To my delight we were introduced to Toft’s ice cream by Michael’s brother, Steve. This was at an ice cream shop in the Port Clinton area. As is my habit, I ordered their chocolate ice cream gracing the top of the cake cone. A small one please. It was a beautifully rich chocolate color. Not pale at all! Hmmm, this was a good sign. Next the taste test. This chocolate did not disappoint in flavor. Just the right balance of chocolate to satisfy the tastebuds, not cloying, no coating the tongue, and a nice clean milky finish. This is what I always enjoy in a frozen treat on a warm day. Yum!!
So when we traveled to Sandusky we had to make a stop at the locally famous Toft’s Ice Cream Parlor. (On the premises of the dairy facility.) We parked the car and into the parlor we went. Inside we were greeted with a long case containing the ice cream and frozen yogurt with the cheerful staff standing behind the counter waiting to scoop up whichever flavor(s) you wished. When I looked in the case trying to pick from their 70 flavors I spied a beautifully dark rich chocolate color. This time I felt I should try their caveman chocolate with chocolate chips. I ordered first. “A small caveman chocolate on a cake cone please.” I said. He got right to work and gave me my cone which I thought was huge for a small! While I waited for Michael’s order I tried to stay ahead of the melting by licking all around the cone as best I could. The young man behind the counter noticed that I was not keeping up with the melting. He asked if I would like a cup, to which I gratefully said “Yes”. I immediately put the ice cream cone into the cup and he passed me a spoon along with some napkins (for the drips on my hand). After we got Michael’s order and paid for our refreshments we found a seat outside and proceeded to enjoy our dairy concoctions. A nice treat on a warm day. We both enjoyed our choices. Yum. For me….Caveman Chocolate was a very tasty treat. Definitely my new favorite flavor! Michael usually goes for butter pecan, though he does try way more flavors than I do. He said he really liked his flavor choice as well. For me I will stick with my chocolate flavors.
A brief background on Toft Dairy
Toft Dairy was started back in 1900 when Chris and Matilda Toft sold their milk from a horse drawn wagon. Lucky for us, their business succeeded and continued to grow to where it is today. Not only is Toft a successful dairy but they have multiple ice cream shops where you can enjoy their delicious products. The dairy is supplied by local farms which make deliveries to the Sandusky plant 365 days a year. The Toft dairy is dedicated to producing the best product with the finest ingredients. To the point where the dairy farms that provide the milk to Toft’s have submitted written pledges stating that the farms would not use the synthetic growth hormone rBST. Now that’s a commitment to quality handed down through five generations.
