Adventures with Angels’ Choice

Michael and Chris

Hello!  My name is Chris and my husband is Michael.  Our 12 year old Calico cat is Miss Kitty.  Michael and I have both had professions that kept us busy for the last few decades.  Along the way we learned how to sail our inland lakes and enjoyed our time out on the water.

Michael and I went on our first sailing charter down in the British Virgin Islands (many years ago).  We fell in love with traveling on the water and we decided then that we would save up to buy a boat when we retired to sail off to distant shores.  That was when we were young and retirement was in the far distant future.  We kept ourselves busy remodeling our home with the help of family and friends.  Learning along the way that things rarely go to plan.  The angels always seemed to have a different agenda than we did.  Time flew by.

With retirement approaching, I started looking at our options.  Sailing in the Caribbean would be fun, but too far from quick travel connections.  I did not want to be too far away from my parents, so quick travel to an airport was a priority.  What to do?

I researched the whole nomadic lifestyle in an RV and thought we could give that a whirl, but Michael wasn’t interested in traveling in a land yacht.  Then I heard about America’s Great Loop.  In case you do not know, America’s Great Loop is a circumnavigation of the eastern part of the United States.  You start anywhere, but for example:  You travel up the East coast until you reach New York Harbor and then you proceed up the Hudson river until you reach the Great Lakes.  You sail the Great to Chicago, where you enter the river system.  Down the rivers you progress until you reach Mobile Bay (in Alabama).  Out into the Gulf of Mexico to Florida you go.  Traveling the coast of Florida until you return to the eastern seaboard.  And Volia!  You have made a loop!  The journey is about 6,000 miles in length and you can go as fast or as slow as you want.  You can complete the loop in a year, or break it up in sections. It’s something to think about.  Just how long does it take you to travel 6,000 miles at 8 mph (when conditions allow you to travel)?  Hmmm, this sounded good to me!

Hey, Michael, I said.  How about traveling by boat and doing the Loop?  He was interested.

Slow is good.  You get to explore all kinds of towns and cities along the way.  If you are lucky, you can travel into Canada and explore a small portion of our neighbors waterways, while marveling at feats of engineering that were built over 100 years ago. It’s a nerd’s dream come true!

We invite you to travel with us on our adventures as we explore America’s Great Loop.
